KING AFFONSO I FACULTY — Law and Political ScienceBeing established
A faculty being established, devoted to law and political science.

Affonso I, Mvemba a Nzinga
A man of letters who read and wrote Portuguese, Affonso I built schools, churches and roads, and made his kingdom one of the first states of sub-Saharan Africa to maintain a regular correspondence with Europe. When the Atlantic slave trade set about emptying Kongo of its inhabitants, he took up his pen: his letters of 1526 to King John III of Portugal are among the first protests against the slave trade written by an African sovereign.
The faculty bears his name because the first of rights is the freedom of the person, and because law, the written word and diplomacy are legitimate weapons against arbitrary power. Mbanza Kongo, his capital, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Central associated institute: IDIA-BG, Dakar
The Institut du Droit International Africain et de la Bonne Gouvernance, founded and chaired by Maître Saïd Larifou, contributes to the design of the programmes. It mobilises its experts and practitioners of law and of the science of government, and organises sessions and pilot courses with the university. The partnership is being developed.
